Project Description:
My two-month residency at Sculpture Space provided me with much needed time time to work on my labor intensive and process driven sculptures. I used this time to explore scale in my work, cutting individual sheets of plywood on the bandsaw and stacking them to create organic forms. I also developed new ideas and experimented with new materials such as clay, mesh and acrylic paints.  The ability to focus freely on my own work for two months really allowed me to achieve a flow in my work. Sculpture Space provided a perfect environment for new ideas and concepts that can only be born from a great space, good facilities and seemingly limitless time.

About the Artist:
Vivian Chiu is from Hong Kong and is currently a Brooklyn based artist. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design and in the Furniture department she developed her interest in woodworking. An individual that likes to push herself mentally and physically, she believes in the value of hard work, a philosophy that drives many of her designs. She is interested in the contrast between the organic and geometric and enjoys pushing the boundaries of wood as a sculptural material. She has attended residencies at Anderson Ranch Arts Center and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.
