Jia-Jen Lin

Elmhurst, NY
Residency: February-March 2014

Project Description
I created a series of clear resin sculptures casts titled We Can See Them Gradually Dissolving, representing various organs and tinted with red color inside, symbolizing suspicious entities and growths expanding or disappearing. Another piece I created with Sculpture Space’s facility is titled 60 Gram Is Non Does, a sculpture composed of metal pipes and rods, feeding bags, and air pumping machinery. By combining the shapes of chandelier and organ pipes (symbols of luxury and spirituality) with those of disposable medical supplies, I recomposed them into a sarcastic mechanical contraption.

This project was made possible with the support of Sculpture Space and the sponsorship of the Taiwan Ministry of Culture and Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government.

About the Artist
Jia-Jen Lin is an artist whose work integrates sculptures, installations, videos, and performance collaborations. She received her B.F.A. in Painting at National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei and her M.F.A. in Sculpture, Installation, and Multimedia from School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Her work creates imagery that relates to the human body as it reflects in our minds. Hybrid culture, the coexistence of nature and artificiality, and our changing physicality and mind bring her to create a landscape where the uncanny and the impulsive are deliberately presented. By creating wearable structures, modifying modern products, and working with physical and psychological dualities, she is in search of the perceptual distance between our artificial environments and our physical sensations.

Her residency at Sculpture Space is also sponsored by Taiwan Ministry of Culture and Cultural Affairs Bureau, Taichung City Government.
