About the Artist:

Jayoung Yoon was born in Seoul, Korea. Her work varies in format from video to photography, installation, and performance to deal with the perception of being present. She was awarded the Franklin Furnace Grant Fund. She has attended many Artist-in-Residence programs such as Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, and others in Utah, Florida, New York in USA, and Argentina. She has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in the USA and Korea. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Project Description:

Walking

By using our senses fully in everyday life, people can enter into the inner body which is a threshold of ‘Being.’ I create a work to invite people to pay attention to the subtle moment to feel the ‘Now.’ I try to capture the subtle moment of ‘Now’ and convey an intimate feeling and physical tension through sculpture, installation, performance and video.

I made a structure out of broken eggshells for their natural, ephemeral and tactile materials qualities. I set up this structure at the outdoor to capture the light changing from sunrise to sunset. I also filmed the video and recorded the sound of walking on the eggshell.

While I was walking, I was fully conscious of feeling the eggshells with my bare feet. I circled to counter clockwise and spiraled toward the center, which represents remembering the memories, and circled to clockwise and spiraled toward the edge of the circle, which represents cleansing the memories. The final video with sounds will be presented on the projector in gallery sites or outdoor public spaces.

Invisible thought (work-in-progress)

I keep trying to visualize Being, mind, and thinking in my work. By using the tactile qualities of materials such as human hair, I try to transform the invisible thoughts of the mind into my physical art works.

I casted my body with plaster bandage. It is a support sculpture to make a human shaped piece from my hair. It suggests spirituality and mind. I will make a video performance with this hair piece.
