Project Description
At Sculpture Space, my goal was to work on a series of sculptures that relate/continue each other in the same space. Each of these pieces pursue visual notions of landscape, topography, built structure, grid, prop, and found object developed through ideas concerning play, embellishment, nostalgia, and affection for materials. Each large piece is a fragment of my personal landscape history, primarily constructed of plywood and fabric, rearranged and fused with “beam structures” and “stick towers” of varying scales. Within the world of each piece, emphasis is placed on every material connection point through embellishments or embedment. The pair of smaller glass pieces,WhiteStickJar and GlassRockSystem, are proportional reversals of the larger fabric and wood constructions, found object vs. landscape, where the “natural” forms are contained/revealed within the composition of glass vessels.

About the Artist
Audrey Hasen Russell grew up on the family farm in east Tennessee and received her BFA in Sculpture from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a MFA in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Audrey, now in Brooklyn, has been creating sculptures and installations traversing memory, found object, and fantasy landscape. She recently attended the Robert M. MacNamara Foundation residency in Maine. Upcoming projects include Sculpture Space residency during Oct/Nov 2008 and the Sunroom Project at WaveHill, Bronx, summer 2009.
